I was working in a record store (yes, I said “record”) when I learned that Neil would be coming to Miami in late October for two nights. So I lined tickets up for both nights and eagerly awaited my 2nd and 3rd Neil performances. Another one of those 80s shows that showed how his live performances belied the unevenness of his recorded output from that era, I remember Neil and the Horse were absolutely on fire both nghts. But the story doesn’t end there. A couple days after the show a customer came in to the store and we started chatting about Neil. He mentioned that he had a recording from the 29th and casually asked if I’d like a copy. Thinking to myself that this was a trick question, I, of course, accepted. Though I really did not expect him to come back. Well, I just have to say that Rusties are the coolest people in the world because he did, indeed, come back and I’m very pleased, after all these years, to share this performance . I don’t know if he was the taper, but I’m guessing that this is a 1st gen copy from the master. The show features a scorching Down by the River, Eldorado when it was Road of Plenty, one of only two performances of Long Walk Home, and an Opera Star that melts the paint off the Knight Center’s walls. The immortal Sam Kinison also makes an appearance as the angry neighbor. I had also managed to get my camera in past security and got a few shots. The photo with Elvis looking down on Neil I especially treasure. I’ve enjoyed this performance many, many times over the years. Thanks to d5scott for the transfer. Thanks to the DIME community for giving me so much that I can never hope to pay back. Thanks to that anonymous Q Records and Tapes customer whose generosity lives on today. And, of course, thanks Neil, long may you run. Notes on SQ: Generally a VG audience recording, although a little bass heavy and a few dropouts. Inca Queen is cut (probably a tape flip). There are also the occasional, and very annoying, talkers during the quieter numbers. All in all, a very enjoyable listen. Please enjoy, share freely, and don’t convert to lossy. And never, ever sell this recording, unless of course, you want your soul to rot forever in hell.
