Neil Young & Crazy Horse Dean E. Smith Center Chapel Hill, NC USA February 28, 1991 A Doodee Music Master Recording "If it's a DOODEE, you know it's the SHITŪ" - Stripeydave 2008 This post is all about freely sharing some great music, spreading the word about these bands, increasing sales of their goods and attendance at their shows and having a little fun - no pressure or anything, but please comply. _______________________________________________________________________________________ Here's a dusky jewel mined from the bowels of the basement fo' ya folks - Neil Young & Crazy Horse puttin' the gritty, grimy sonic meltdown on the Dean Dome. This is a pretty nice 'un taped near the front. I have the utmost respect for Neil. He's one of the bravest artists out there, not only with what he'll try himself thru constantly reinventing his musical styles but with who he'll align himself with out on the road. This particular show we had Social Distortion and Sonic Youth on the bill. I thought they both killed it, really playing as lots of these "underground" bands did in '91 with something to prove. Sad to say, even in a musically progressive college town, the majority of folks there just didn't seem to get 'em. But I did, and Neil did, and that's plenty good enough for me. I'll answer the impending questions that I feel are coming up front - I didn't tape Social D or Sonic Youth. First, I was in a sticky situation security-wise and didn't feel like pressing my luck even though I deperately wanted to record them both. Second, I had two previous shows lined up to see NY & CH that fell through and I was makin' damn sure I was leavin' this one with a tape. As for the concert itself, absolutely impeccable - a turn it up to 11 rawk show if there ever was one. And as we have all come to expect from our outspoken Neil, a rawk show with a very thinly veiled underlying message - no war. I love Neil and all his musical incarnations but my fave will always be watching him lay down a blistering solo while he paws the dirt standing out front of The Horse. This show had many highlights but the fave for me was "Cortez The Killer". I saw an opinion posted on a NY upload here a while back that they thought this was the best version of this song from the "Ragged Glory/Smell The Horse" tour. Can't definitively say as I haven't heard 'em all but I can say you won't be disappointed with "Cortez", or any other tunes here for that matter. This one made the rounds in cassette format a bit thru trading circles way back when but I've never put a gussied up lossless version from my master out there til now. Dang near twenty years down the road and here it is. Ain't technology grand. One note - I chose to make "Like A Hurricane" mono on this one. As was (and is) the case with ye olde analogue cassettes, they're sometimes prone to a crinkled edge here and there causing the top end to drift in and out in one channel. That was the case with my master for about all of "Hurricane" and I felt the mono version was easier to listen to. Primo Neil here folks. Not sure if we're ever gonna see him kick up the dust like this with The Horse again, much less with the ferocity they displayed back in '91. But then again, it's Neil we're talking about here. Who knows. Nothing can be ruled out. I don't condone living in the past but there ain't nothing wrong with basking in it's glow every now and then. Check the samples and use the democratic process. Y'all enjoy. Setlist 01. Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black) 02. Crime In The City 03. Blowin' In The Wind 04. Neil's Buzz 05. Love To Burn 06. Cinnamon Girl 07. Mansion On The Hill 08. Fuckin' Up 09.
